Driving the Baja peninsula

Here's my plan: sometime in July my husband and I would like to drive down the Baja peninsula, then take the ferry accross to Puerto Vallarta and continue on to Ixtapa. We plan about 2 weeks for this trip (one way). Does anyone have any good advise? Anyone done it? What's the temperature like at that time of year?
