Taxis

NOTE: These taxis are not the same as the Ground Transportation service at the airport. Currently, local taxis are prohibited from picking up passengers at the airport's terminal or on the airport's property; however, you can always carry your luggage outside of the airport gates and catch a taxi dropping off passengers or even one of the passing combis (a small van modified for public transportation, often a VW bus). It's about 100 yards from the airport terminal to just outside the gate where there is a small open-air restaurant where you can have a refreshment.

Taxis are plentiful everywhere, including Barra de Potosi and Troncones, so that getting around shouldn't be a problem wherever you are (except when it's raining). The taxis are usually very clean and well maintained.

Taxis can also be reserved for trips to the airport or simply for sightseeing. They can be reached at 554-3680, 554-8809 and 554-8772 (APAAZ); 554-4583 and 554-3311 (UTAAZ); and 554-4763 (UTZI).

Their rates are fixed and are supposed to be displayed in their cars, but it's good practice to ALWAYS ask how much they charge to take you someplace BEFORE getting in their car. Rates for taxis based in Barra de Potosi and Troncones may vary from the ones based in Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa.

You'll find that many taxi drivers speak some English. They are often very helpful and will provide you with much useful information about our area. Some are very good guides and will give you an interesting and informative tour. These you should try to get a personal phone number from if you'd like them to be your personal guides while here.

Local Buses

There are many buses and micros (pronounced MEE-kros) for getting around our area. The smaller buses are the "micros" which run continuously between Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, including the beaches, and other nearby communities. They are the most common mode of public transportation. The price is usually $7 pesos between Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa, $5.50 between Zihuatanejo and Playa La Ropa, and $8 between Zihuatanejo and Playa Linda ($4.50 pesos is the minimum). There are also several buslines with hourly runs to Petatlán, notable for its colonial turn-of-the-century architecture, its church, and its open-air gold market in front of the church.

Car Rentals

Cars can be rented either at the airport, through your hotel, or at their various offices in both Zihuatanejo & Ixtapa. Currently we have Hertz (airport tel. 554-2952), Avis, Dollar, Budget, Alamo, and AcaRent. Be advised that the rates are expensive. Since you can walk or take a bus or taxi easily to almost anywhere I suggest considering renting a car only for serious sightseeing trips outside of our two towns or if you need to frequently get back and forth between Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa and outlying areas such as Playa Larga, Playa Blanca, Barra de Potosi, Troncones, or Saladitas.

If you do decide to rent a car please be sure to see the sections on Road Assistance and Driving Tips.
